Scotia Gems is operated by John Hood of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia , Canada. His family
have been jewellers for many generations.
The agates are collected
from the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Some stones from other areas are bought in the rough and then handled in the same way
as the local material.
The stones are cut into slabs using a diamond
saw. Then the stones are cut into shapes and rounded into cabachon shapes, using a variety of saws and grinders and polishers.
The settings are designed and made by John. He uses sterling silver or gold-filled wire
to make the settings. Each piece is unique.
